The world of waste management and recycling is an unpredictable and ever-expanding one where we never really know what we might be asked to deal with next.
As well as the more standard requests, we have in our time been called upon to take care of everything from an extraordinary amount of bird guano, a large and rather dangerous amount of explosives and, most unusual of all, a dead whale. Indeed, this is one of the greatest and most exciting things about working in waste management – you really never know what you’re going to be asked to deal with next.
However, even when things are slightly more mundane, waste management still throws up some fascinating facts and figures. For example, did you know that…
Even though we now recycle so much more than we ever did, it is still the case that as much as 60% of the rubbish we end up tossing in the dustbin could be recycled. Up to 50% of it could be composted.
Furthermore, the energy discarded in the average dustbin over one year could run a television for around 5,000 hours.
Similarly, the energy saved by recycling one tin can is enough to power a TV for three hours, the energy saved by recycling one glass bottle could power a computer for 25 minutes and the energy saved from recycling one plastic bottle could power a 60-watt lightbulb for three hours.
Making things from scratch uses up much more energy than making them from recycled goods. For example, it takes 70% less energy to make recycled paper compared to producing it from raw materials. Also, for the energy used in making one brand new tin can from scratch, you could make 20 recycled cans.
Aluminium cans are the most recycled piece of packaging in the world, with more than 50% of the planet’s cans now being recycled.
In the UK alone, approximately 14 million glass jars and bottles remain unrecycled and are sent to landfill every single day.
It was predicted by the Local Government Association six years ago that all of the UK’s landfill sites would be full by 2018.
Apparently, 90% of people say they would recycle more if it were made easier.
This last fact is particularly interesting to us at C&M, where it is our mission to make recycling easier for the many businesses that we work with.
We have got ready a few documents to help you make the right decision for your business.
